Hi, I can’t remember a time in my life where art of some sort has not played a part, be it just drawing as a child or adult or anyone of a number of artistic hobbies including jewellery making, leather work, metal work, even custom cars.
My trade is a sheet metal worker so I have also been surrounded by machinery of one sort or another for many years, so I have always been used to working with small tolerances. Early in the 1970’s I became a police officer in the West Country of England before migrating to Australia, with my family and settling in Perth, Western Australia. I took up a career in the security industry where I stayed until ill health forced an early retirement, lost with nothing but spare time I turned to my art, which at this time was woodturning.
Having spent a large part of my apprenticeship working a large heavy old metal spinning lathe I had always harbored a secret wish to give woodturning a go so I went and tried it, I was completely smitten watching wood shavings come off a dirty old log and then transformed into something that at least I thought was great.
It took a few more years before I really was starting to get somewhere and I was starting to win competitions and make things that people wanted to buy, or were interested in just picking it up and commenting on.
This has spurred me on to bigger and better things and I now teach privately and demonstrate at events at other woodturning clubs. I also keep galleries in the Southwest of Western Australia stocked with my pieces of wood art, this I find extremely satisfying and now have a fully equipped workshop in my Perth home and can take on most woodturning tasks without much worry.
I enjoy teaching the art of woodturning and will always where possible take on a student and teach the basics of woodturning or up to advance turning such as deep hollow forms or spindle work right down to the making of pens and small house hold items, lessons can be tailored to suit a client very easily.
Requests for that special Item are always welcome and can usually be accommodated and a price agreed upon, most of my work is made from timber from the forest floor or from professional dealers, never trees that have been cut down for no apparent reason.
I am always happy to talk to people regarding woodturning matters and can be contacted via this web site.
